What Is the Optimal Concrete Mix Design for PCC C15 Strength Applications?

PCC (Plain Cement Concrete) grade C15 refers to a mix design that achieves a characteristic compressive strength of 15 MPa (megapascals) at 28 days. This type of concrete is typically used for non-structural applications like foundations, sidewalks, and pavements. The optimal concrete mix for C15 strength depends on the available materials and local standards, but a general guideline for proportions by volume or weight is as follows:

General Mix Design (Nominal Mix for C15)

  • Cement: 1 part
  • Sand (Fine Aggregate): 2 parts
  • Gravel/Crushed Stone (Coarse Aggregate): 4 parts
  • Water-to-Cement Ratio (W/C): 0.5 to 0.6 (by weight)

The proportions can also vary depending on the specific materials used and the aggregates’ quality (grading, moisture content, etc.). Always consider local codes or standards (e.g., Eurocode, Indian Standards (IS), British Standards (BS), ACI) for guidance.

Considerations for C15 Mix Design:

  1. Water-Cement Ratio (W/C):

    • Lower W/C ratios improve strength but reduce workability; for C15, 0.5–0.6 is a good range.
    • Avoid exceeding 0.6 to prevent a weak mix.
  2. Cement Content:

    • Minimum cement content: Approximately 280–300 kg/m³ (to ensure proper strength development and durability).
  3. Aggregates:

    • Coarse Aggregates: Typically 20 mm (3/4 inch) nominal size is appropriate.
    • Fine Aggregates: Clean river sand or manufactured sand with proper grading.
    • Ensure the aggregates are free from impurities like clay, silt, and organic materials.
  4. Workability:

    • Adjust water or use a plasticizer/superplasticizer if needed to maintain workability without excessive water.
  5. Mixing:

    • Properly mix the ingredients to ensure even distribution of cement paste to coat the aggregates.
  6. Curing:

    • Proper curing should be maintained for at least 7–14 days to allow the concrete to gain adequate strength and durability.

Example Mix Proportions for 1 m³ of Concrete (By Weight)

  • Cement: 280–300 kg
  • Fine Aggregate (Sand): 700–750 kg
  • Coarse Aggregate: 1050–1150 kg
  • Water: 140–180 kg (depending on W/C ratio of 0.5–0.6)

These values may vary depending on the specific materials and project requirements. For more precise mixes, laboratory tests should be performed to design the mix using proper gradation, specific gravity, and absorption of the aggregates.

Always verify the mix meets the target compressive strength of 15 MPa with trial batches or standard design tables.
